Medical Assistants work alongside physicians, mainly in outpatient care facilities, medical offices or the hospital environment. They may also work as health assistants in school settings. The program is divided in two semesters.
- The administrative program training includes: Scheduling, billing, ICD-10 coding procedures, insurance form review and preparation, Professional Medical computer skills, Career development, life skills includes resume assistance and interview process.
- Classroom instruction includes: Anatomy and physiology of the human body, disease management, medical terminology and pharmacology, vital sign training and assessment, including pain management. CPR/First Aid Certification adult/child/infant is provided.
- At completion on classroom instruction, the student is required to complete 160 hours of a clinical externship at an approved medical facility.
For entrance into this program, the requirements are: A pretest, knowledge of basic computer skills, an interview and high school diploma or equivalent. A criminal records background check is mandatory; additional fee is the responsibility of the student.
Upon completion of both the classroom and externship components, the student will be awarded a Certificate of Completion and is eligible to sit for the National Competency Certification Test (NCCT). Additional information and fee costs for the NCCT will be distributed upon completion of the course. National Certification is the responsibility of the student.
This course runs from September through June at Gaylord Hospital and Mark T. Sheehan High School. Class meets two nights a week, Monday and Wednesday evenings from 5:30-9:00 pm and every other Thursday from 5:30-8:30 p.m.
